MEMBERSHIP OF THE SOPHY: The Benefits you can enjoy!

 

The aim of the Canberra Society of Philosophy for the Young (SOPHY) is to promote Philosophy in schools. Thus it plans to offer a range of services for its members.

  • IN-SERVICE WORKSHOPS

    The association now has a trained team of experts who will provide in servicing for primary or secondary teachers either as a whole staff, or as individuals.
     
  • TEACHER SUPPORT

    Teacher Support is available to teachers.

    Do you need help with resources? Do you want someone to visit your classroom?

    This is especially important in the early stages, when it can all look very difficult and demanding.

  • NETWORK MEETINGS

    Network Meetings will be held once each term to strengthen the community of Philosophy teachers.

    Meetings may include:
    • Adult discussions of Philosophical issues.
    • Forums in which teaching experiences and strategies are shared with expert speakers
    • workshops to develop discussion plans


    These meetings will be informal.

  • NEWSLETTERS AND UPDATES

    One newsletter will be published each year which contain articles from home and abroad, items of interest, book reviews, children’s contributions and dates of coming events.

    We will keep you informed of forthcoming activities in the Philosophy community through regular Updates.
     
  • FAPCA & ICPIC

    As a member of SOPHY you will be automatically affiliated with the Federation of Australian Philosophy for Children Associations (FAPCA), which now includes New Zealand. and Singapore

    SOPHY is affiliated with ICPIC the international body.
     
  • INFORMATION SESSIONS FOR PARENTS AND STAFF

    We can conduct information sessions in your school to explain the aims and advantages of including Philosophy in the curriculum. You may wish to have a speaker at a staff professional day, or an evening for parents.
     
  • CONFERENCES AND MINI CONFERENCES

    The FAPCA conference rotates between state associations. This year (2006 - 2007) Victoria is hosting the Mini-conference.
     
  • RESOURCES

    SOPHY is developing a library of resources, which will be available to members for loan.

Institutional               $150
